“Can you hear me?” How many times have you heard a phrase like that in the last month? Or in the last year? I bet a lot!
With online meetings and digital events, checking the connection has become extremely common. Besides that phrase, there are several other terms that are very characteristic of the online events world.
That’s why we put together this Online Events Glossary: the definitive guide for anyone who attends or organizes events. This way, you’ll always be up to date on the terms most used by organizers, speakers, and attendees of online events.
Let’s get started?
Online Events Glossary: The Most Common Terms
On-Demand Content
A strategy used by event organizers to boost registrations and make the event more profitable. It consists of keeping the event’s content available for longer so attendees can rewatch it or watch it whenever is most convenient for them.
Hybrid Event
An event that includes both in-person and virtual activities — hence “hybrid.”
Facebook Live
Facebook’s live-streaming tool.
Instagram Live
A social network where you can stream content live. However, it’s a more informal social network and harder to track attendee presence on.
Google Meet
Google’s video conferencing tool.
Integrations
The ability for a virtual event to share information with different platforms.
Example: On Even3, you can integrate the data collected during event registration with tools like RD Station.
Moderator
The person responsible for selecting the questions asked by the audience so speakers can answer them, or for guiding the topics of an activity, such as a round table.
The moderator can control a presentation’s timing, introduce speakers, and run activities like Q&A games.
OBS Studio
A free live-streaming and recording program where you can build custom layouts.
Q&A
An interactive activity held during online events, short for “Questions and Answers.” It’s a way to make a virtual event more dynamic.
Simulive
Simulive combines two words: “simulated” and “live.” It’s a type of broadcast whose whole purpose is to simulate a live stream.
The content is recorded in advance and streamed as if it were happening live in that moment. So, if an attendee joins a simulive late, they won’t be able to “rewind” the video and will miss part of the content.
Streaming
A type of media or technology that lets you consume content without needing to download it.
The term “streaming” is used both for movie and music services, like Netflix and Amazon Prime, and in the world of online events, when it comes to broadcasts, such as Even3 Streaming.
StreamYard
A web-based tool built for running live broadcasts through a browser. With StreamYard, you can stream your online event on more than one social network at the same time, as well as create more creative layouts for your broadcast.
Recorded Broadcast
A recorded broadcast is one where the content is recorded ahead of time, before the event’s broadcast.
Since it’s recorded in advance, the event’s content can be edited, and the organizer has the option to fix mistakes, add bumpers, speaker logos, and more.
Pre-Recorded Broadcast
Another name for a recorded broadcast. A pre-recorded broadcast means recording an online event’s talks or content in advance. Recording and broadcasting don’t happen at the same time.
This gives the organizer and speaker more time to plan and edit the content.
Live Broadcast
In a live broadcast, recording and broadcasting happen at the same time. Think of the famous Instagram Lives and YouTube “live” streams.
Video Conference
A video conference works like a virtual classroom. In it, people in different locations gather in a virtual environment, where they may or may not turn on their laptop or phone’s microphone and camera.
Only people inside the virtual room can take part in the video conference. Access can be granted through links or passwords, depending on the video conferencing tool used.
Among the types of online events, this is one of the easiest formats to organize!
Video Call
A video call is similar to a video conference, but less formal. Typically, people use video calls to ask questions, catch up with friends, or gather with family.
At online events, organizers also offer video calls in a mentoring style, with speakers as a bonus, add-on item.
Webinar
A webinar is a class, seminar, or online conference streamed to a specific target audience in video format.
It can happen either through pre-recorded content made available online or through a live broadcast.
Zoom
A video conferencing tool.
